Fifth Annual Multi-cultural Celebration
Saturday,
January 26th was the fifth year that
the Multi-cultural Celebration was held at
Central
Valley
High School.
The event has grown from the
first year that Mien families had the idea of a
celebration thanking the
Shasta Lake
community
for welcoming them into the area.
The luncheon served in Talon Hall consisted
of rice from many cultures, Mien-style vegetables
from the nearby community garden, foods
from India, prepared by the Sikh Centre and
the Islamic Center, fry bread, acorn stew and
salmon from Native Americans, greens
prepared by the Martin Luther King Center
and S.C.O.A.C.H.E., tamales from the
Hispanic community, Italian cookies and
biscotti, as well as ice cream,
water and coffee.
Talon Hall was decorated with student
art projects celebrating cultural appreciation.
The projects were from several schools in the
Gateway
School District, as well as from
Northwoods Discovery charter school.
Over thirty nonprofit organizations had
booths in the hallways, and were well received.
This year the program moved into the
large gym to accommodate expected growth.
The weather cooperated, and the turnout
was so great that additional chairs were
needed to seat the crowd.
The program began with the presentation of
international flags carried by students and
AmeriCorps volunteers, the pledge of
allegiance and “America
the Beautiful”
played by Bob Elrick on his bagpipe.
Shasta Lake City Councilman Rod Lindsey
and CVHS student Eliana Sotelo were the MCs.
Larry Farr, mayor of
Shasta Lake,
read a
proclamation establishing January 26, 2008
Multi-cultural Day.
The entertainment went from Buckeye
students drumming and singing, Edelweiss German
singers and dancers, the SAILS/Islamic Center j
oint international fashion show, DAWI
Native American drum group, the Simpson University
Asian Fellowship fashion show, Bayanihan Association
Philippine folk dances, Shasta College
Polynesian Haka and singing troupe, the
Shasta County Mien Community dance troupe,
Jinjer’s dancers, and Local Indians for Education
fancy dance troupe to an audience participation
Native American round dance.
Participants said it was the best
Multi-cultural Celebration yet. MC Rod Lindsey
summed it up when he said,
“You can just feel the love.”
